85 | Searching for Paradise

An ideal or idyllic place or state. That's a paradise according to the Oxford’s English dictionaries.
Azores is one of those places. This Portuguese archipelago is a paradise for adventurers and a growing destination for tourism. In fact, this is the first archipelago in the world to achieve international certification of sustainable destination by an entity accredited by the Global Council for Sustainable Tourism. 🏝️
The amazing volcanoes, calderas, lava fields, fumaroles, hot springs and thermal pools alone are worth every bit of diligent effort the Azores is currently committing to protect while aiming to keep low levels of development (only 5% of the Azores’ ground is urbanised). 🌋
Talking about geothermal places, the Azores currently generate about 40% of their electricity from renewables, 60% of which come from geothermal energy (the remainder is provided mainly through wind and hydroelectric power). 🔋
Even though I was in the Azores in the high season I didn't perceive a lot of tourism as in many other places in Europe (i.e. Greece, Cyprus, Croatia, etc.). Luckily the location in the mid-Atlantic is not easily accesible for everyone. 🤪
