84 | Is This A Real Country?
I've recently been to an unrecognised breakaway state that is internationally recognised as a part of Moldova under military occupation by Russia. In other words, Transnistria. 🤯
Although Transnistria declared its independence in 1990, no United Nations member recognises its sovereignty and the region is considered by the UN to be part of Moldova. Currently, only Abkhazia, the Republic of Artsakh and South Ossetia recognise its independence, all themselves states with limited recognition.
Due to the situation in Ukraine, almost all international offices advise against all travel to Transnistria. There have been a number of explosions in the Transnistria region in late April and this place is outside the control of the Moldovan authorities.
Knowing all that, I stayed alert at all times. I felt like I was visiting the Soviet Union in the 80s. One of the craziest trips I've ever done. Of course it didn't have the adrenaline of West Africa but it had the unknown factor, the feeling of being observed and the need of keeping a low profile.
Have you ever visited a breakaway region or “country”? 🧐
Have a great week!

Of course Transnistria doesn't count as a country in the UN list. So let's get serious, I'm hitting the 80th country (40% of the world) next week and it will be in Africa. Keep an eye here to find out! 🤫
By the way, the first episode of the West Africa series will air this month on the channel. Believe me this has been by far the most challenging thing ever to shoot. West Africa is no jokes, logistics are a whole new thing so I cannot wait to share these episodes with you! 🍿
