41 | FOMO Is The Reason
Hey guys,
This week, I released a video 🎬 8 Years Without Facebook 🚀. This is about why I took that decision in May 2013, what happened after and my thoughts now.
FOMO is the Fear of Missing Out. It's becoming more common and creates a lot of unintended stress in our lives. This feeling is the perception that other people are having fun, living a dream life and experiencing better things. This perception involves envy and hits self-esteem. In fact, Social Media is contributing to it. 😨
For some reason we tend to think and feel there are better things that we could be doing right now. We're missing out something. How many times do we check our emails, news, infinite scroll and open our favourite social media apps to know what's going on? 📱
If you haven't watched The Social Dilemma, I'd strongly recommend it. It's a documentary where tech experts sound the alarm on the dangerous human impact of social networking. 📺
I also talk about FOMO during my latest video and this was one of the 5 reasons delaying my decision to leave Facebook even earlier. I only started Instagram 2 years ago and Twitter last year. But my screen time is minimal. I think I learned my hard lessons with my Facebook experience. 🧘🏻♂️
On the other hand, FOMO is not just valid for Social Media but I think it's valid for many aspects of our lives. For example, at some point last year I was doing Filmmaking courses, Photography courses, YouTube academies, Notion mastery, Building a Second Brain… and other cohorts. 📚
I finished 80% of all those courses but still 20% sitting on my to-do for very long time. Same thing with Amazon, sometimes I buy stuff and I don't even unbox for months. Why? FOMO. Fortunately I no longer have FOMO in Social Media but this evolves and it can potentially be part of our routine. So let's watch out. 🦟
Have a great week!
Alejandro
